Middlemore Hospital

Your time will be spent between the General Wards (20 hours) of Middlemore Hospital and Tiaho Mai (20 hours).

Tiaho Mai, the Mental Health Inpatient Unit, is dedicated to fostering collaboration between mental health services and individuals seeking support. We prioritise transparent communication with service users and their whanau, discussing the potential impact of changes on their care. 

As a residential unit, Tiaho Mai provides essential care for individuals facing mental health challenges during crises. Our goal is to create a secure environment where residents can stay briefly and safely transition to other mental health services. Our team includes dedicated chaplains who offer spiritual and emotional support to individuals and their families throughout their journey.

Situated in the peaceful grounds of Middlemore Hospital, near the rear Colvin Complex, our Tiaho Mai residential services can accommodate up to 52 residents across multiple wards. Visitors, including family and friends, are welcome during a stay. Adjacent to Tiaho Mai, you'll find Nga Whetu Marama (meaning "the Bright Stars"), a marae/whare named by respected local Kaumatua of Tainui, where individuals can find solace and support.

The Interchurch Council for Hospital Chaplaincy (ICHC)

ICHC Is a collaboration of a broad range of churches, is committed to providing Christian Chaplains within Aotearoa New Zealand’s healthcare environment. 

As Chaplain you will be part of multidisciplinary healthcare teams, working with other Chaplains across the hospital providing holistic care to all.  You will gain experience and provide spiritual care to patients from every culture, life stage, denomination, faith-orientation, belief, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation.

Key responsibility areas:

  • Delivering spiritual healthcare to patients suffering ill health or accident, to their whānau, and to staff within a public hospital.
  • Responding to crisis calls from hospital staff, patients and whānau including "on call" hours.
  • Regularly, and on request, visiting wards and units to provide spiritual care and attend appropriate meetings within the hospital.
  • Conducting spiritual and religious services and rituals in the hospital, if required.
  • Collaborating in multi-disciplinary meetings, therapeutic groups and other processes as appropriate to role.
  • Teaming up and working positively as a unified Chaplaincy team in each Hospital.
  • Supporting colleagues within regional chaplaincy teams and across the Motu.

With your empathy and compassion, excellent listening and pastoral skills, and a good level of religious, spiritual, and theological understanding, this is an exciting and rewarding time to join our team. Your knowledge and experience in a ministry of pastoral care in a health or in faith community leadership will be key to your success.
