The Bishop of Dunedin invites applications for the role of

Vicar – Upper Clutha Parish, Central Otago, a full-time stipendiary position.

 

The Parish and Bishop seek a Vicar who

  • is able and keen to lead and cultivate strong, capable ministry, among both the local ministry team(s) and the larger parish communities – someone who is committed to working collegially and collaboratively;
    • is an effective communicator, who can preach the Gospel with confidence, compassion, and humour;
    • has good “people” skills; is approachable and an adept listener;
    • is empathetic; has a strong commitment to inclusion and inclusivity (in relation to aspects of people’s identity, including race, gender, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, different abilities); and is at ease, and willing to foster relationships, with young people and children; 
    • is comfortable with various traditions and expressions of Anglicanism;
    • will help to foster stronger links between the parish’s three faith communities, and will participate readily in local intra- and interfaith events;
    • has the energy to travel between the churches, to visit parishioners, and to initiate and institute new, fresh approaches, even when there may be some resistance to change;
    • has a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and to the use of Te Reo;
    • is a person of prayer, with an evident personal spirituality, and who has strategies to sustain their ministry and well-being.
    • Is in good standing with their Bishop.

In the context of one of the fastest growing regions in the country, there are many opportunities and challenges ahead for this parish. The Parish is keen to be led by a vicar who relishes the parish’s potential.

 

Terms

  • Start Date: By negotiation – possible start late 2026/early 2027
  • Type: Full-time stipendiary
  • Initial Term: 3 years, with expectation of extension
  • Location: Wanaka, Central Otago
  • Clergy housing is available
